After the sun sets, the dogs seem a bit more eager to get home.

My ski buddy spent some months in Antarctica. He visited the Kiwi camp, where they still use dog sleds. He could pet the dogs, but had to start with the lead dog and then proceed down the line, skipping no dog until the end. Otherwise, they would gang up on any status-maligned member at night. I had to wonder if this was a side-effect of selective breeding for their work environment.

  1. I think this makes a lot of sense. Since the dogs are working dogs, they need the appropriate respect any worker is entitled to. It is sort of like respecting a corporation’s hierarchy. 😉

This is a wonderful view and great composition! It looks like soft fresh snow. We are getting some more in the next hours. Snow is so nice to experience.

  2. I just saw something about dogs and status. If one dog feels you are slighting another, they turn away from you so you’ll focus on the neglected dog. Maybe not just a "sled dog" thing, but sounds like they take it to the extreme.

  3. Wow! Amazing photograph. Just saved it as my desktop background.

  4. I just learned something. Nice shot too.
