For the Valentine’s weekend activities…

Mary Roach was particularly proud of her Danish animal husbandry activism video.

Her list, and perhaps we didn’t want to know…
• You don’t need genitals
• You don’t even need brain activity
• It can cause bad breath
• It can cause hiccups
• Doctors once prescribed it for fertility (the “upsuck theory”)
• Pig farmers still do. (thus the instructional video)
• Female animals are having more fun than you think.
• Studying human orgasm in a lab is not easy
• But it sure is entertaining.

    Oh!

    I learned not long ago that the parts that activate in your brain when you have an orgasm are same and close to the areas involved in feeling pain, what would explain why our expressions and gestures of extreme pleasure seem so similar to those of extreme pain.

    (btw "Pain is so close to pleasure" turns out to be more than a nice Shakespiarian metaphor)

    btw, it’s quite true you don’t need genitals to have an orgasm, or at least you don’t need them for that. Otherwise when you have a, uhm, dream you wouldn’t be able to have an orgasm without being awake and without any action on/with the genitals. And we actually can have one, and in a pretty more satisfying way sometimes because of the relaxation –I guess– than in "real life" sexual activity, while awake.
