This was the moment during the inauguration ceremonies that Barack Obama became the President of the United States of America.

The crowd went nuts, almost drowning out the canon burst salute.

  1. Great speech and afternoon. Was great to be following it live through our Global Network. Hope you are having a great time, as we all did in France, and all around the world ! =)

Live-Visual connection, from the other side of the Earth ; )
    PhotonQ-President BARACK OBAMA

  2. This is the poor man’s point of view – watching it on TV.

    Today’s a fantastic day!

  3. Awesome day…!!!!

  4. One of the network talking heads said something interesting. They said at 12 noon (while Yo-Yo and the others played) Obama WAS president even though he had not quite taken the oath of office yet. I wonder if that is true.

  5. As I was walking by the conference room in my office earlier, I saw the words on screen that I have been waiting to see for a long time. "…FORMER President Bush and his wife have just left the city…"

  6. I was watching via the web from my office at CERN. It’s nice, now that I’m in Europe, that I can be proud to be an American again.

  7. Drowning out the Canon salute? So Nikons are just for republicans? 🙂

And congrats from the Great White North. We’ve been waiting for you. 🙂

  8. Vanita, it is true. According to the rules, Obama becomes Prez on Jan 20th, 12:00 Noon, regardless of whether he has taken the Oath or not.

  9. P^2: oops… Canon/Cannon, Potato/Potatoe 😉

Just look at that 21 camera salute going on behind him…

Vanita: good to know… so this is 6 minutes into it.

  10. Excellent, now get on with it!

  11. I heard on CTV that traditionally, it is at 11:59 that the future president begins to take the oath and it is at the handshake following the oath that the man is now president, at noon.

So obviously, even if they were a few minutes off the tradition, it is the handshake that seals the deal. I would like to know what is the correct version.

    Nice shot Steve!

  12. Ahhh! But now the key question. Who is going to jail! I think Rove is first in queue. Then Gonzo, then Rummy. Bush might want to borrow that cave Bin Laden has been hiding in. He is going to need it!

  13. Lets give Bush some credit here and appreciate his massive contribution to America’s future. Life wasn’t tough enough on its own with a new millenium of peace and prosperity staring us down. By turning that into security fear, destruction, inviting hatred our way…and the most brazen economic looting in human history, was just the push our collective drive toward enlightenment needed.

I have to admit that the applause signified both relief that the marionette fratboy era is over, and the genuine proof that something really new can still actually happen in American politics. So GoBama! Go U.S. and go US! – now that Bush showed America how an ininvolved under-educated population can be robbed blind 4 generations into the future and left holding the debt bag…to give their kids as their ‘inheritance’. On a cautionary note, I rather oppose Obama’s idea for closing Quantanamo. It should be given a fresh hose down and converted into a ‘RESORT’ for BushCo, OilCo, ArmsCo, BankCo and FedReserveCo,his whole administration, his whole family, everyone they know… how about anyone in politics over 1 year? Can we really do worse with honest inexperience vs. this newfangled in-bred corporatism?

  14. If my opinion is still worth anything, let me repeat what I said a long time ago:

"If the American people ever allow the banks to control the issuance of their currency, the banks and corporations that grow up around them will deprive the people of all property, until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." That’s what I said and I really, really meant it.

I’d like to also thank the outgoing president for demonstrating this with such perfection, that I must ammend it to "till their grandchildren wake up finding themselves ‘holding the bag’ as Victor1 put it, and hopefully asking for a refund from the ‘bleeder’ leaders and the slothful generation that buried them, their prosperity and future generations in the handcuffs of debt while they were too busy shopping on credit to play their essential part in the democratic process… like being awake for starters.

Thanks Mr. Bush… was hoping I made the point back then but what’s the harm in a little ‘catch-up’ work for the next 1/2 century, while the people Americans gave their money to use it to brush them aside economically and leave them permanently behind? Oh, and nice work on retirement packages for you and all your friends through Vietnam II, er, "I-rack".. (up the bucks and bodybags) – its prudent to have an interest free retirement account with plenty of flexibility.

  15. It’s almost midnight here, on the left coast. What a day! Good night, Mr. President!

  16. Interestingly, as a matter of law he actually becomes President at the stroke of noon EST. The swearing in and oath of office are purely ceremonial. Still, nice shot! 🙂

  17. Actually I heard that he became President at exactly 12:00 noon, regardless of the oath. Apparently the Oath is not in the constitution, only the time and date of power transfer…

    Great photo though…

Only when I pressed the button did I see that someone else had pointed this out. Oh well, now there are 2 of us that believe this. Likely both heard it from the same source – NPR

One thing President Bush did was make it easy for the next guy to look good. President Obama could be a total flop and still do a better job than President Bush, IMHO.

  18. President Obama took the oath again the next day to make sure it is official, just in case.
