Dole bought Lana’i in 1922, and now 98% of the island, with 3,200 inhabitants, is owned by David Murdock. He bought the island for $90M in a side deal during the purchase of Dole. Bill Gates offered $1B for the North side of the island, and David refused.

  1. I will take a spec just to have something to dream about!

  2. Why did he offered $1B for the North side of the island ?
Do you know what was he planning to do of it ?

By the way, how did you get this picture, from this point of view ?

  3. I love Lana’i! Enjoy your stay there!

  4. Lovely pic. I think you mean David Murdock (with a "k") though.

  5. Yes, thanks – I fixed the caption. CEO of Castle & Cooke Resorts. 86 years old, monopolist of the lands, and according to my local surfer source, not so sure he wants to leave it with his "26 year old leather-pants wearing son." The locals feel vulnerable.

  6. larry ellison got it cheaper that gates could have 😉 great shot
