I was very happy to ride a horse born on this seaside ranch. As soon as we got to the beach, she bolted straight to the ocean. I think I became invisible as we went for a magical trot through the surf.

Last time I went horseback riding was many moons ago on the beaches of Costa Rica, and a very amorous horse emerged from the jungle, on the lose, and spent the next half-hour trying to bust a move. It’s bizarre to be riding through attempted animal husbandry. They can be very persistent!

  1. Ah, I would love to the the horse on the beach. I am glad you are still living!!!

  2. It took ages to find my contact to show you this photo that your story reminded me of so here it is:

You might enjoy Antonio’s tale and photo.

  3. Hahahaha

I’m envisioning you trying to avoid horse-play while capturing a picture…

  4. Oh….that place has been in trouble for animal abuse in the past and is pretty unpopular with people who live in the area. I’ve been repeatedly accosted by seemingly drunken staff members from there while walking on the bike trail during visits.

  5. Yikes! And they have 120 horses there. Well, perhaps I should not be surprised, given how they treat trespassers!

Mimosa: back to the romantic reverie, I have seen horses tentatively tip-toeing in the surf like that before. It is adorable.

  6. I went here too, I went to Sea Horse Ranch first, and tried to get their early discount, but on their site I noticed it said 9 and earlier on one page and 9:30 and earlier on the next, so I called the night before and asked, they guy tells me 9:30. We get there and the owner who is missing teeth tells me I can’t get the discount, so I try to explain but she won’t listen. So I go to Friendly Acres, thinking it was a different owner. Luckily the wranglers let me go, and she didn’t show up! I had a good ride though, even though the horses did look like they could be taken much better care of. This is why I never went back again. When I was a kid this place was much better, I think it has gone downhill! Wish I had money to buy my own beach rental place!

  7. I love your shot, I don’t recall that hilarious sign 31 years ago. The rest of your picture looks kind of familiar. Check out this far older image.
