Heroes…

“A whole generation got into math and science because of Apollo. The President has to talk about it in a way that has not been done recently. It’s a subtle thing. In the last several years, I have been shocked by the degree of anti-intellectualism that has been promulgated by the Bush Administration. He jokes about being a C student. ‘I’m not big on science. I know what I think.’ Kids absorb that. I’d like to spend eight years extolling the importance of science and technology and problem solving and critical thinking.”

Part of the job of the next President is to make the Federal Government cool again.”

  1. *breathes a sigh of relief*

Moving past Bush’s anti-intellectualism is long overdue. I hope we didn’t lose a generation of students to his ‘gut-thinking’.

Not that C students can’t change the world, it’s important to remember academic achievements don’t necessarily translate over to other dimensions.

  2. I think that the extension of this anti-intellectualism would have been the single most damaging component of the other ticket. McCain should have known better, but it became clear in recent months that the McCain of this election was not the same McCain of the mid 1990s. He demonstrated a significant lack of judgement (regarding both the role of science and technology as well as the importance of a scientifically literate public) with his selection of a running mate (this one really got me).

  3. GREAT Picture! Joking about being a c student bothered me too! Our young men need these role models like PRESIDENT Obama who made it without having a silver spoon! Your picture has a great message. I REALLY did want to vote republican this year but education matters so much to me. Both Barak and Joe Biden had the better educational background for sure. Here’s to promoting Math and Science as being "cool". Having his mother/grandmother help him be who he is today was very inspiring to me. Parents need to parent. I only wish they were there to see the result. 🙁 What an inspiration! Glad Ms Palien is going to concentrate on helping her own children.
