In the movie about the EV 1.0, Who Killed the Electric Car?, Bob Sexton observes that electric cars are clean for the repair crew as well. No oil or grime.

  1. The motor is so small, and so powerful!

  2. I hope that’s in the shop because you drove it like you stole it!

Electric motors should have an incredible lifespan. What’s the deal?

  3. well… looking at the photo I would say that’s part of production and not a repair. No tags on the car (so it’s new) and other brand new cars sitting near it (some with protective covering still on them). I think he was just referring to the movie and not this specific car.

Cool shot from inside the mother ship! =)

  4. Yes, that’s right. And my car is not in the shop. I was stopping by, and figuring out how to port my iTunes library to the HDD in the dash =)

  5. You’d still need servicing though, right? Moving parts still need lubrication…? Unless maybe all the bearings are sealed, I suppose. Replacing all the batteries would be a big ($$$) service too!

    I still want one 🙂

  6. That Car just had the wheels coated black by the owner. It looks great!

  7. No oil or grime?! That’s a point that I’d never considered.

  8. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Tesla is a great looking car, but I sure think it is a shame how many designers default to the huge plastic monocoque rear end panel.

  9. You’ll love the Model "S" design.

  10. And NO, I don’t have pics of it to share yet…

  11. I would have to agree…. I recently saw it at SpaceX with Elon and Franz (and they have approved this sneak peek):

  12. There’s an article on roadandtrack.com dated DECEMBER 2008 showing a picture of the Model S:

    Same car?

  13. The base price model of the tesla roadster is $109,000. This is a high end car. The garages where other high end cars are worked on are also usually clean. Just because the car is electric doesn’t mean it does not have or use lubricants.

Does the car have power assist steering or brakes? Usually those systems on a car are hydraulic using a oil. Perhaps this car uses a different power assist method since they don’t have the motor running all the time.

  14. This is soooo heartening – seeing tech *finally* being used intelligently.

My other dream is to see high speed bullet trains (with car carriers too) running in the median of some our most congested highways.

  15. The pic is a "photo illustration" and not very good looking car.

Now for the definition of a "photo illustration".
A type of computer art that begins with a digitized photograph. Using special image enhancement software, the artist can then apply a variety of special effects to transform the photo into a work of art.

The real Model S is a work of art…

  16. I’ve been to the web site and I think the car is a beauty and I really want one, however, the price tag is beyond my car budget and the lack of a local dealer (or a dealer within 1,000 miles) is the reason this will be in the dream category for the foreseeable future. In the future as the volumes grow, perhaps you will market a performance car in my price range. By then, your dealer network would have expanded to somewhere near me.

  17. Yes, that is the plan… but even better, no dealers playing with price as a middleman. Tesla sells direct.

as for the fluids in an electric car, I’m not the expert on this thread but the key difference may be that they are not integral to a combustion chamber. If fluid leaked out of your brake lines, it would be a serious problem…

  18. Instead of dealer maybe I should have more correctly said "factory trained and authorized service center." With a new type of equipment, having someone to take the vehicle to for maintenance is critical. If this was a traditionally powered car, there are many possible mechanics who could service it. I read that Lotus builds them, perhaps Lotus dealers could also be pressed into providing service after the sale.

Regarding fluids – the web site suggests that fluids are not used for the power assist systems for the brakes and steering, but I’m not sure of this. I’m not even sure that those systems have a power assist function. The web site was lacking on certain details. I was hoping onesock, who apparently works for the company, would fill in the gaps, but alas he must be in marketing as he only blabbered on about how the car was "a work of art…"

  19. easy there…. jumping to the wrong conclusions…. Onesock is in love, not marketing! =)

Manual steering. Brake lines should not leak fluid IMHO.

  20. Manual steering? Now I’m curious about the braking. I remember something about energy recovery brake system. Back to the web site later for answers to these burning questions.

Onesock is in love? With the car or the company? I’ll agree that is it a great looking car and I haven’t seen the model he was talking about…

  21. Oh, there is regeneration whenever you are not accelerating, but for extra braking power, there are the ABS disc brakes.

Check out Who Killed the Electric Car? and all will be clear… =)
