    Very good question…. The sun had set off to the left a few hours earlier, and it was pitch black during this shot…

    Assuming thermal emissions can’t be detected by the sensor, I would have to guess it’s light bouncing off the atmosphere back to the playa, and scattering in the distant haze

    The moon is enough to make night look like daylight with a long enough exposure – even the colors come out about right due to its whiteness and reflectivity. Also, the launch would ‘light’ the area to a degree too (see the bright spot on the ground right under the plume). Cool!

    Duh! I forgot about the moon! =) I thought this was from the September launch where there was no moon out, but alas this was from July, and it was a full moon. thanks!

    The current WIRED issue 16.11 has a cool story on this event… and I think the leading photo was of this rocket of mine…
