The first Google Lunar X-Prize competitor… inside an unmarked building at NASA they affectionately call Area 51.

The trampoline room allows for soft hopping and airborne flight testing of their robotic lander.

In a nod to the Moon 1.0 efforts of 40 years ago, Moon 2.0 will use the original Lunar Orbiter imaging tapes to prospect good landing spots.

From Odyssey Moon’s corporate site (now defunct, and reborn as Moon Express, as covered by Forbes):
“Forty years ago the Moon was a major focus of human attention and activity. After a little more than ten years of enormous effort and achievement, the governments abandoned their programs, never to return. Until now… and this time the efforts of governments are joined by a growing interest from the private sector to partner in the permanent return to Earth’s sister world. This time we are in search of energy, resources, and answers that will help us understand our home planet and secure Humanity’s future.

Moon 2.0 begins…”

  1. was this purely a design coincidence, or was it actually intended to resemble Darth Vader?

  2. LOL! aeroculus. 😀

Very true. It took me a while to see the resemblance, but once you see it it’s undeniable.

  3. Woot! A new chapter begins.

I hope we can get this type of a competition to design and build for exploration of the deep.

  4. Looks like they’re serious… they’ve gotten well beyond the PowerPoint stage. I wish them success!

  5. Yes. Ad Astra!

Aero/alieness: Yes, from the thumbnail and when I squint, I clearly see Darth’s helmet.

Eclectic-Echoes (such a timely name): Yes… I’d want to fly Deepflight

    Open Hatch

  6. Is it not interesting how we always need to visit a "sister world" (in any context) to be able to understand our own world or our own selves!?

  7. Learning from a differential…

OM just announced their NASA partnership, so this photo just changed from private to public.
