Last I had seen of these was the Evel Kneivel X-1 Skycycle trying to jump the Snake River Canyon (more)

Looking online, I see the Germans launched one in 2001

  2. Now, aren’t the space shuttle main engines also just steam rockets? Big, complicated, expensive, and pretty efficient for their class, but really just steam engines…

  3. nope, but the Shuttle boosters are really big versions of all the other rockets you see on this stream – solid segmented motors

  4. I meant to mean the SSMEs run on steam: the exhaust is nothing but high pressure steam, hence (loosely) steam engines… I didn’t mean to imply it’s driven by steam-pressurized water.

    Just a little dig to say we are still quaintly Victorian in our means to get to the rest of the universe.
