I got a peek under the PEM module at something normally hidden from view – the custom Tesla motor in my Tesla Motors car. It’s also the generator – while braking, it recharges the batteries.

3-phase, 4-pole electric motor
Max net power: 185kW (this will go up when I get motor 2.0)
No shifting required.

  1. you’re already taking it apart?!?

    wait- i can’t judge… i probably would as well. =)

  2. Heh… like my cameras…

    Nude Lumix

P.S. The output of this little baby is pretty cool, from max torque at rest to gas-beating power up through 13,000 RPM:

  3. Look at you. You haven’t had the thing 5 minutes and you’ve already taken it apart!

  4. Motor 1.0 is 185 Kw and you say Release 2.0 will go up from there – this means (I assume) that the battery can actualy put out that kind of grunt (otherwise what’s the point…). Thatsa some kinda battery…

Be carefull you don’t drop your screwdriver across the terminals.

  5. it really is rather incredible power output…. especially when the website says the car uses "commercial grade" lithium batteries.

    spectacular!

  6. Stop taking pictures of it and head up Skyline! :OP

  7. Outstanding, really
But Needs a bit more power jokin

  8. Those curves look like a whopping punch before the surroundig goes blurry….
I wonder what a carrier pilot would say about that.

  9. I think Tesla is calling it "Drivetrain 1.5" (not 2.0).

Max current is supposed to rise from 640amps (1.0) to 850amps (1.5). So in some cases, 30% more power!
    320hp, 240kW… Yeah!
Let us know when you get "upgraded!"

  10. Awww man…I love the “Parts Game!” Always fun to play when you are the passenger….nothing goes back until the driver can tell you where it goes. You game?? =)

  11. Ah… no test drive for you.

Brings back memories of being yer back seat passenger, with a screwdriver…

  12. so is the custom part the recharging while braking? or is something else custom?

  13. Correction/additions to my previous comment:
Powertrain 1.0 is an initial Roadster prototype motor+controller+gearbox expected to be replaced soon.
Powertrain 1.5 is supposed to be the production motor+controller+gearbox for the Roadster.
Powertrain 2.0 is expected to be for "Model S" (their upcoming sedan)

Powertrain 1.5 is expected to have 30%+ more amps than 1.0, but max HP is still not published. Stay tuned. Much info here:

I think the "custom" he mentioned is just that the eMotor is made by Tesla exclusively for this car. It isn’t used in any other vehicle as far as I know.

  14. great link, thanks! I just have to share those pictures with my son.

  15. Tech Review just posted a view from below the motor:

1 – AC induction motor (no permanent magnets)
    2 – Gearbox
3 – Bottom of the PEM (Power Electronics Module)
4 – Rear of the aluminum space frame, seen here:

  16. hank you for this amazing photo! I used it in my post here (with all the credits, of course): dailyfusion.net/2013/07/scientists-to-develop-mass-produc…
