The design influence for my L3 rocket project

“The North American X-15, a rocket-powered research aircraft, bridged the gap between manned flight in the atmosphere and space flight. After its initial test flights in 1959, the X-15 became the first winged aircraft to attain hypersonic velocities of Mach 4, 5, and 6 (four to six times the speed of sound) and to operate at altitudes well above 30,500 meters (100,000 feet).” (Smithsonian)

Clearly, the Pimp My Ride folks need to get a bit more hardcore…

  5. heh heh – that reminds me of a time when my father took me to Rockingham Motor Speedway for a NASCAR race, and – after a slight amount of drizzle – these Chevy pick-ups with jet engines pointing downward came out to dry the track, driving really slowly…

  6. heh^3… Those Chevy pickups can do so much more…

  7. daft!

i can’t find any photo or quick reference to the ones used by NASCAR… when watching those, we couldn’t help thinking that if one were to be a little firm with the throttle, the thing would do a 180° flip onto its roof, and burrow several furlongs underground 🙂

i’m just holding out for the rocket booster episode on the up-and-coming show Whore My Segway
