The sunset was so surreal tonight, rolling soft colors across the fields…
and then I saw the double rainbow, strangely monochromatic…

  1. This rainbow was *amazing*. My wife and I were walking to our car after having dinner in Menlo Park and we just couldn’t believe it. (Also amazing–I didn’t have a camera on me at the time.) I’ve never seen a sunset rainbow before. (Also weird that there is actually some rain falling on Silicon Valley tonight. That doesn’t happen often in August.)

This is a great view of it, too….more impressive than it was down in Menlo Park.

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

  2. In Los Altos, the colors of the rainbow were more sharply defined than I’d ever seen. Sadly, I didn’t have my camera. Glad you had yours. Truly a stunning event.

  3. Wonderful image! Looking foward to my first sunset rainbow!

  4. i saw this tonight, too… and you are right, was so surreal. …have never seen a dark rainbow at dusk

  5. wow, this is much better than my version!

  6. that’s a real cracker

  7. Cool, you see the whole rainbow

  8. oh wow. really nice capture.

  9. Here is a picture from Newark CA, didn’t have a wide angle lens though. http://www.flickr.com/photos/morgret/2737749208/

  10. last night I was just saying "where is my camera"!!!! – great shot and amazing rainbow… we had an excellent view in Los Altos!

  11. Congratulations!
Your photo is very interesting and beautiful – Well done !

    Found on explore …

  12. god that´s beauty!

  13. Beautiful shot. Sounds like it was a very much photographed phenomenom. Surreal’s certainly an apt word for it.

  14. Very cool! When the only light coming in is red, you get a red rainbow. Explained here:

  15. Whowwwww amazing.
And what is fun is how many people from the area went outside to take a picture of it.

Here is what we had in France. Must have been some kind of Earth SunSet Day =)

  16. Yes, that was "quite the thing". I was driving down Alma/Central enjoying it the whole way home.

Glad you had your camera handy because this was one to remember!

  17. Amazing, if you look closly, I think you find that there is a Möbius strip in this one. 🙂 More rainbows should have them.

  18. kbaird: cool… so, unweaving the rainbow, we have a red-shift from dispersion overlaying the refracted coherence of total internal reflection (A) but not backscatter (B)…

  19. This is just… beautiful. Incredibly beautiful.

  20. Superb !! Absolutely stunning – Great job 🙂

  21. we have a red-shift from dispersion overlaying the refracted coherence of total internal reflection (A) but not backscatter (B)…

the very same thing happened to me last night when i was trying to think too hard about rainbows in my bubble bath *

’tis an interesting one – seems that enough integrity is preserved after both total internal reflection and backscatter to define the double bow strongly enough through the general diffraction taking place in that band of droplets…

  22. Congratulations!
Your photo is very interesting and beautiful – Well done !

  23. that Cree quote is a good one – but, then again, i’ve occasionally found the odd Zimbabwean Dollar quite tasty and nutritious – although perhaps only psychosomatically so, with the knowledge of how many zeroes are printed on the bill… *

"Rainbow That Shines In The Night" – i knew there was something appropriate somewhere in that giant list…

(adopts Casey Kasem accent) – "Sundance" is also very well represented, with not one but two entries in Native America’s Top 53, kids!

😉 – i jest, Holger. happy Thursday 7th to you!

Wonderful red glow to the whole scene. Great info here as to why the rainbow is red at sunset.

  28. stunning photo, glad you captured for all to see.
another interesting thing about this rainbow is that it seemed to span a 40-50 miles radius, people as far south as morgan hill, and as far north as san mateo were mesmerized by it.
(p.s. too bad a note was left on the image, detracts from its initial impact)

  29. I’ll move it to the corner.

    thanks y’all

  30. well seen, bravo =)
