“A béguinage comprises a courtyard surrounded by small dwellings. It is often encircled by a wall and secluded from the town proper by one or two gates.

The beguines were a religious women’s movement. Their success, according to the Belgian historian Henri Pirenne, was due to a surplus of women occasioned by violence, war, military and semi-military operations, which took the lives of many men. Great numbers of women had no option but to unite and collectively secure the aid of rich benefactors.” (wikipedia)

  1. ‘rich benefactors’… Interesting word choice. Sounds to me like a sugar baby thing.

  2. Funny Todd! Sugar daddy benefactors!

Well Steve, you managed to teach me a word in my own language, béguinage! Obviously, this is a Européan context.

This looks like a nice place to visit and take a walk!

  3. Great image!

This is an invitation to post this photo in the ~Elegance~ Group.

  4. Great image of this beautiful nunnery!! TY so much for sharing it under CC-licence. I hope you don’t mind what I’ve done to your nunnery 😉 …
