Looking back down through a laser-scanned 3D model of my empty head to the inside of my face…

But our vision systems flip the perception of the face, no matter how illogical the big picture may be.

  1. yes, reminds me of the illusion created with this rotating mask of charlie chaplin

  2. How cool =)

    "I WANT TO BELIEVE"…what i see ! ; )

  3. Our vision is built for 3d not 2d – it’s amazing that we make any sense out of information presented this away at all. Reminds me of the Coldplay CD cover.

  4. it’s cool that you can do 3d scanning at home with the help of your digicam… 🙂 try the demo: imodeller !

  5. this is fantastic – i also thought of those rotating masks, and of the spinning radar at Heathrow (and other) airports where it would look like it bounced between clock- and anti-clockwise, no matter how hard you tried to envisage seeing it as a coherent, rotating object.

when i was young, i used to stare at the ceiling (bubbled wallpaper) until the shadows threw opposite relief and created dimples instead of raised bumps. eventually, this led me to staring at the roof of my parents’ car, which had geometric dots all over it – and one could achieve a "depth" as the focal point increased, reminiscent of a Magic Eye image without any internal relief…

i have extreme deja vu – may well have told this story elsewhere on your photostream!

  6. Pretty darn interesting!
