I could not tell if it was a coyote or a dog because I was shooting with a 1000mm zoom, and the action was far away. The canine made several rushes at the horse, but a good rear kick finally sent him packing.

Nestled in a Nature Conservancy preserve, this “coyote canyon” seems appropriately named as it gets a lot of coyotes; I caught a pair on film one morning finishing off a deer.

  1. "coyote canyon" 🙂

    Cool…

  2. Utterly amazing.

OK – I can see having a small camera in one’s pocket and at the ready for unscripted photo "opportunities". But now I have this vision of you, permanently in gunslinger stance, with a 5D and 1000mm lens strapped to your thigh in readiness for nature’s grab shots. (Raptor scarfing a mouse, canine attacking equine, any number of examples…)

"Just luck" he said – yea – right…

  3. *oooo yaaaa* – great moment

  4. Absolutely fascination!

  5. 1000mm hand held. 1/10 sec. Nerves of steel. Or maybe a really good image stabilizer.

  6. Who does that little guy think he is to strike at a horse! Good for the horse!

I imagine that you were at the ready for something else like perhaps some Canada Geese that are starting to come home.

  7. It always amazes me at our horse stables how these small jack russell terriers attack and bite hooves or running horses, not really minding the kicks of someone tens of times larger than they are.

  8. Mimosa – heh, I saw our ambassador geese today, and biked right by this bench…

    empty nest

  9. I mentioned this above because hours before, someone had sent a photo to the weather department of a local news station as proof of their return. It is a sign of the new season.

Good. I hope you said hello to the
    Canada Goose (Bernache du Canada).
