The amount of material hauled to the Montserrat mountaintop with medieval technology is breathtaking.

This Cathedral and the neighboring Benedictine monk compound were built around the Black Madonna statue… as was the Catalan cult of the Virgin of Montserrat.

This is the view that the statue has looking down to the nave.

Each year, millions of pilgrims (and the occasional Pope) climb the mountain to pay homage to the 3 ft. tall dark statue that is said to have been made by St. Luke and brought to Montserrat by St. Peter in AD 50.

Carbon dating indicates that she was carved from 12th Century trees. This must be one of the many miracles associated with the statue. =)

I am off on a different pilgrimage of sorts, to the brain spa of TED. Will bring cameras.

  1. That is a hell of an image. Nice to know she worked the same miracle on the Turin shroud …

  2. Beautiful symmetric finely lit photo; the large version is stunning.

Noe Venable sings about the Black Madonna:

  3. I love how your photos are more than just visually interesting, and you use this as a excellent medium to communicate ideas and information which you do a super job of. Also I like how there are a lot of people who add to the discussion and ideas, so you never know by clicking on one of your photos how much at first glance it will ignite the spark of feedback/discussion that might turn into a huge explosion of new ideas and collective knowledge!

Brain Spa, That rocks! I know you will get loads of great photos, I can’t wait to watch all the talks when they post them online.

love the HDR treatment. Monserrat is definitely amazing. I think it’d be a feat to build the complex with modern technology.
