Cruising by the Synthetic Genomics Board meeting in San Diego today.

Not sure why it appears to not be flying a country flag.

  1. things that make one say ..???

  2. I believe you took a pic of the USS San Antonio (LPD 17), with the Stealth Crane designed to be able to deliver an entire battalion of Marines.

  3. Jolly good shot too, the scenery is good.

  4. beautiful detail in the distance too…lighting conditions look like they were near perfect…

Are native ships required to fly their own flags while in their own country?

  5. I think the flag is flying off the port side of the front stack. See the notes. Maybe it’s a stealth flag.

  6. Yes, there are three flags on a line there – a yellow square, on top of a yellow+red checker, on top of one that is half white and half blue (vertical rectangles).

Looked like semaphore flags to me.

I thought military vehicles carried the country’s flag?

  7. jurvetson Not always. Flags don’t cost nothing, you know, and flying them exposes them to the elements–esp. salt. No need to fly them when you’re out in mid-ocean.

You can learn more about the USS SAN ANTONIO and its class at those links, and find a large image here.

It’s been a long time since I served aboard ships of that sort. I don’t miss the haze-gray sea monsters too much, although it had its moments.

  8. its actually the USS New Orleans (LPD-18). the USS San Antonio (LPD-17) is on the east coast. and its a ship, not a boat.

  9. Das Dingy! You say Boot, I say Boat, but does it float?

You Army guys can be so persnickety
