As a passive latecomer to Facebook, my contact clustering reflects a network crawl of preferential attachment (ref. Linked).

The circular layout makes it easy to read the names, and to see some interesting groupings (see overlay notes), but bogs down with a scribble of supernodes on the bottom left.

An alternative depiction is the 2D splat map used by Lumeta for the Internet and Gustavo for flickr networks.

  1. I like the circular map, the patterns from simple clustering based on node connectivity are easier to pick out that in a spat map. I do admit the circular maps don’t scale well or deal well with supernodes.

  2. aliens somewhere there?

I need to know more about how this is made..

  6. vas, I missed him too… and wondered just the same…

Now we also have dear eye to add to friends too. 😉

  7. More to the point, how did you make this graph?

  8. ahhh…the interconnectedness of social networks!

i’m just about to start on "Link" which i had bought a month ago but my girlfriend promptly stole it off me before i had a chance to begin it:) apparently DFJ gets a mention in it?…

what i find fascinating is both the interconnectedness on the micro scale as shown in this wheel, but also our connectedness on the global scale, and how we "rely on collections of wires (under the ocean) of less than 10cm diameter to link us all together".

Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
    Never ending or beginning,
    On an ever spinning wheel

  10. Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art… It has no survival value; rather is one of those things that gives value to survival. – C.S. Lewis

Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy. – Proverbs 27:6 (now after I have given up the faith, the bible may still have one thing right) Interesting how would you define a friend?

  11. got to be in it to talk about it 🙂
It really does seem to be deja vu for people who’ve been on the internet in the 1990s. The exchange of small games, quizzes, jokes, etc were the norm, pretty much the same as what we have in facebook. The difference is the ease of finding and adding friends!

  12. Steve – what is this application that generated the map?
