In this case, over the paging network. I just had to look inside my throbbing Ambient Orb, tuned to the NASDAQ Index.

I like it more without the glass diffuser, revealing the sharpness of unfiltered emotional pointillism… . .. .

You can add your emotional points to the collective. Yesterday, the Internet was anxious; now it’s confused.

Or, you can keep a mood log running on flickr, like Vanita does so assiduously. 😉

  1. We call our "throbbing ambient orb" connected to the NASDAQ "the anxiety ball" as it blazes red almost every weekend. ‘-}

"throbbing Ambient Orb" … lol… I guffawed like a teenage boy!

A minute ago the internet was feeling "loved". Ego pats must have gone out.

  2. "the sharpness of unfiltered emotional pointillism."

…is my favorite phrase of the day!

  3. STEVE!

You aren’t supposed to look at the Man Behind the Curtain!!!

  4. Naked electronics, again! *drools*
But how is it actually connected to the Net? And in what way does it control the LEDs from that data?

  5. @schoshie: the 929MHz band is the paging network (Metrocall), and that provides the data feed. I think the antenna is the metal loop at the bottom. To your question in the notes, yes, the power jack is on the left, and this whole thing is small, about 2" on a side.

@Todd: more on that later… it reminds me of the perfect photo to post.

@louv: here we see the cross-talk of emotional synaesthesia… Pointillism over time decouples all this and leads to the race condition of boys and baboons… 😉

  6. You’ve spent way too much time as a modern art critic, haven’t you? 🙂

  7. Quite an eclectic stream. very cool.

  8. Eclectic is a good term for Steve’s stream.

  9. I am very confused by your description, but I like the photo 😉

  10. err…marketing department says…

I would never buy an ambient orb, but I would buy MANY of the device pictured above…way cooler raw than occluded…

how much less would they cost without the orbular-cover?

ps: it would seem the same circuitry could be connected to a few multi-color strands of xmas tree lights…then tuned into…retails sales data (if you own Nordstroms), recent IPO prices (if you’re a VC), snow report from Aspen or Chamonix (if you’re a skiier) etc. Coolest xmas light display ever…for the geeky-ones out there at least 😉 And the applications for Burningman camp-light-arrays are rather endless…
