Great photo Steve! When my brother in law visited there the most interesting thing that he found was that only a small portion was visible, most was completely covered by foliage. Only recently, using satelites, were they able to realize the true extent of the complex.
Tout Le Monde – Viva Google Earth! They found 45 new temples with it.
Just read this in a hotel magazine:
“Constructed in the early 12th century, the temples lay at the heart of the most powerful empire South-East Asia has ever seen. The largest pre-industrial centre in the world, with a population that vastly outstripped that of European capitals, the Angkor complex is the empire’s greatest legacy.
…they later became a hideout for Khmer Rouge soldiers, who used the extraordinary bas-reliefs for target practice. Bullet holes are still visible, etched into the stonework alongside carved figures of Buddhas and voluptuous, sinuous court dancers”
– CNN Traveller, Dec 07, p.42.
Another great civilization of an ancient world. Its legacy are often now discreet but nevertheless very important.
This description from the magazine is a perfect example of how life is never stable. Society can flourish and then its symbols become targets for great disrespect.
