Seen in the Chong Kneas floating village, one of 75 on the enormous Tonle Sap lake. Two months ago, at the end of the monsoon season, all of these tree tops were also under water.

With no land for miles, 2000 people have built a waterworld all their own here.

In contrast to them, the local cats perched on boat’s edge just look irritated.

  1. good wi-fi on Tonie Sap lake?

  2. This is an excellent reminder of the luxury that we enjoy in this part of the world, even when we are living on basic means. All is quite relevant. A meagre income and simple lifestyle here is enviable to these people. Of course, happiness is another question and these smiling mothers are possibly quite content to be in the company of their children living on the water. A good reminder of the humility that we must have at Christmas. True abundance cannot be measured. However, it is unfortunate that these people do not have a real warm/cool, clean and dry home in which to raise their family.

  3. Mimosa – well said. I saw more genuine outbursts of smiles there than at the Aman resort full of international vacationers…

  4. Steve, that is because happiness can only be found within. I bet all those smiles made you and yours smile. A good Christmas gift.
