Craig Venter gave a fascinating talk at our CEO Summit with topics ranging from genetic alchemy to panspermia.

Looking out across the rows of awe-struck tables in the room, Craig reminded me of the bright sledgehammer thrower in the Apple 1984 commercial. One CEO told me he could feel his mental models of the world shifting in real time.

I hosted a wine reception with Craig and the companies focused on microbial engineering. Simon on the right is from the DFJ Brazil office, where they have a keen interest in the bio-energy revolution.

  1. I recognized him immediately from his genomic sequence.

  2. wish his talk was available on video:)

one thing i never understood about the sledgehammer thrower in the 1984 commercial is that she was clearly using a first generation ipod attached to her waist…i’m sure that they couldn’t have been already designing prototypes of the ipod then could they??! (unless it was edited in recently with CGI)…

  3. You look like Wil Wheaton here(?).

  4. I always thought Steve and Wil looked like siblings…
Does Steve have a younger brother?

  5. @heet – The resemblance is uncanny.

@Steve – We should have a talk about microbial engineering sometime. I’ve got some interesting memes you might find infectious.

  6. there’s a great interview with Craig in this month’s rolling stone…along with a bunch of other great interviews…

  7. Steve, I have to ask ! what kind of wine was it ?
    Natural , Synthetic, or FRENCH !!!! =P

Must have been a great "degustation" of memes, and wine !

  8. PhotonQ – Mais oui! I was tempted by a Morgan wine entitled "12 clones" but went for a vertical of wines from Provence instead… with selections from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueras. Yummy yeast piss all around.

Rocketeer – heh, quite a neutron blast from the past… 😉
(I am still impressed with the glass reflection detail)

    Todd- looking forward to it.

  9. I particularly enjoyed reading this Venter quote this am. I’ll be starting some lectures with this one.

  10. A funny update on exogenesis and panspermia:

"My hope is that aliens get a hold of my DNA so my clones can spread entrepreneurship to galaxies throughout the universe," says Mr. Draper. (WSJ Marketwatch)

  11. Cool project.
I am guessing you are not sending your DNA to ISS….Because….you are planning to do it, with your own rocket ? =)

Thanks for the discovery (again ; )

  12. I may have to include that quote in a lecture too. ; )

  13. He came to my town about four years ago and the poor young medical students were also in awe, it was actually sad.
No one asked or perhaps could ‘if the emperor was wearing any clothes’ …that day , that year , that decade ?

  14. I agree Mike. Mr Ventner’s patenting of the human gene is an outrage.
He and his "Frankenstein lab investors’ are going to make basic medical care far more expensive for everyone. Monster medicine.
