The buildings descend from the whitened canopy overhead.

While beta testing the Matrix, the smog provides a nice limit to the visibility horizon within the construct program.

  1. We can even see "bug fluctuations" on the water =) Beta indeed !

Can we ask what are you up to, during this trip ?

  2. I hear they use a special subsystem that renders mattes (static, of course) for the backgrounds.

  3. Ah yes, the white noise visualizer was a convenient hack, but, unbeknownst to the architect, the sky field embeds subtle ripples of background radiation that dates the origin of it all – the "Big Compile" as we call it….

PhotonQ – sure, as it relates to your name… The HK day was for a Board meeting for NeoPhotonics which has large operations in Shenzhen.

And then I had a blur of meetings in Shanghai and Wuxi.

  4. no spoon… no air, no sun, no horizon… pretty sketchy this reality. Don´t you have another one more um… say: "baroque"?

  5. @Steve : Thanks =)
@ Gi : "pretty sketchy this reality"
But aren’ t we ? a pretty sketchy species =)

Talking about reality…. There was some conferences this month in Paris on the LHC (large hadron collider) and researchs around it.

I had some very interesting talks with some of the physicists at the end of the conferences.
On the last three ( Quantum Vaccum Energy- the Cosmological constant , Extra-Dimensions and "To the ultimate laws ?" . We always end-up, talking about the connection and interdependence of the mind/brain with the universe; what we call reality ; on this kind of "on the edge" scientific research.

If our biological-Brain/Computational limitations, can be "hack" with "tools" and technological extensions. And if what we are as human being, is intimately connected with our perception of the universe… Aren’ t we already, changing our nature, by "hacking" our biological understanding of reality, with technology?… If so..what are the implications.. =)

  6. PeterDuke – one of my favorite lines, especially on the elevator.
    Alieness – something Gaudi perhaps?
PhotonQ – Yeah. Humans are not the end point of evolution. We are inserting ourselves into the evolutionary process itself. The next step in the evolutionary hierarchy of abstractions will accelerate the evolution of evolvability itself.

“Each epoch continues the evolution of information through a paradigm shift to a further level of indirection.” – Ray Kurzweil

“The greatest achievement of our technology may well be creation of tools that allow us to go beyond engineering – that allow us to create more than we can understand.” – Danny Hillis, The Pattern on the Stone

And getting back to the universe and cosmology, with evolutionary dynamics operating across different substrates and time scales, one can imagine a wonderful nested spiral of recapitulation… (blog on this)

  7. If you think HK is a construct, you should see Karlskrona in Sweden. I was there for the League of Worlds conference on virtual worlds this month and I was convinced I was trapped on Myst Island. John Linden seemed right at home, but then he would 😉

  8. Very nice!
    I was there, too:)
