Fresh images are beaming back from the HiRISE probe, with the highest resolution ever achieved by a Mars orbiter.

Here you see “Evidence for Water and Wind Processes in Gale Crater”

  1. Looking for good landing spots for the next rover?

  2. Wait a minute, what happened to that "Mars is Red" idea?

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

  3. It’s a bit frustrating that due to legal restrictions, it’s now much easier for the layman to obtain high-resolution 0.3m/pixel satellite pictures of Mars’ surface than of our own planet… 😛

  4. Very impressive images! Thanks for a great link. The antiquity is mesmerizing !

  5. I am interested in the features in the photo that evidence water vs. wind. Clearly both being fluids, I would anticipate the geographic features shown, but how can they dellineate erosion from water vs wind in the photo based upon the features? Is it the jagged edges vs smooth?

  6. @Sister72 — a friend of mine is part of the HiRISE group and I asked him about the coloration, and he says…

"These are all false color images. The PI, Alfred McEwen, and HiROC Manager, Eric Eliason, wrote a paper explaining these color products to coincide with the color release:
