I just drove the Tesla (Validation Prototype), and I accelerated more than I have ever accelerated before.

I only have the Formula and Viper cars at Laguna Seca and Sears Point to compare to… and the X1, and my favorite roller coasters. =)

Speaking of riding on rails, the handling in the coastal mountain turns behind Alice’s Restaurant reminded me of summertime bobsledding – sure you can steer, but it feels like you are locked into the groove without sag or wobble.

The electric motor has maximum torque from a standing start, and Tesla just verified that it accelerates from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds… and that’s without shifting gears, so even a bloke like me can experience it. Just floor it, and zoom!

As a builder of rockets, I liken the experience to Surfing on a Rocket, a theme song I recently discovered by AIR.

  1. Hot. Would absolutely kill to drive one. Hope they make it to market soon.

  2. That is the only car I want to buy. Now I just gotta win the lottery, whether it’s through tickets or stock options.

  3. I’m so jealous!!! I’m just down the road from Alice’s!!!

  4. Beautiful. Looks like you belong in that cockpit, Steve. Yet, I’m insanely jealous! Can’t wait to start seeing these on the road. Sept 2008 seems like a long time away.

Do you know if Tesla plans to get into more affordable models? It seems to me like that would be a logical next step after they get all the tech worked out on their super-car.

Also, the gas station sign is kind of ironic. 🙂
    Also also, AIR rocks!

  5. dankos – Yes. The next vehicle, code named Whitestar, will be more affordable, and designed from the ground up (you can put the battery weight low down if you design from scratch vs. modify a Lotus Elise frame). And you can design for mass production vs. the carbon fiber hand assembly of these roadsters. So you trade off upfront capex/tooling for lower cost/unit.

Inteldroid: current ship plan is 50 cars in Q1 and 600 for 2008. Nice to have the former CEO of Flextronics at the helm for this phase.

  6. I think a woman behind that wheel would look just fine! It is a marvelous looking craft!

  7. Now I’m envious. If only I could persuade someone at Tesla to take part in the EV-JogLe 2008 (A project I’ve started which will cumulate in a 1,600 mile three week roadshow from John-O Groats, Scotland to Land’s end, England raising awareness of electric vehicles in mainland UK) I’d be in luck!

Please tell Tesla to hurry up and get the Tesla in the UK! 🙂 My partner wants one!

  8. Very nice! 🙂 I’m totally jealous!

Funny, where you’re stopped looks like the gas station along Hwy 84…

  9. Yay! I think Tesla got it right. They are making the only electric car that people will be standing in line for. I’ve never really needed a car before (I live in Europe… 🙂 but if I ever get the money, I want a Tesla!

  10. When is the showroom due to open in Menlo Park? Every time I drive by I look for signs of life, still none.

  11. Whoah. Simply whoah!

    Surfing on a rocket… heh… heh… |-)

  12. what a shot ! (particularly with the gas signs – those were the days! – at front)
