BAM!

CATO on the pad. Just before the explosion, my buddy Erik muttered “this should be a train wreck.”

It was the most peculiar rocket. It had what looked like a PVC pipe for a super-sized launch lug with two wraps of duct tape to help hold it on. (In high power rocketry, most everyone has switched to launch pad rails over rods as they are much more rigid). The body tube also had something wrapped around it (perhaps for reinforcement) that made it look like a big black crayon.

From the craftsmanship of the rocket, we could only guess how the motor was built…

(Photo by Nadine, posted with permission; I got a couple shots of this CATO with greater detail, but not framed as nicely as hers. You can also get cool calendars from her site.)

  1. My guess… Not well!

  2. Bingo! And hey, for those wanting to see the action live, Plaster Blaster is this weekend in SoCAL….

  3. Oh man, I saw this from a distance (was using my Jeep for "RECOVERY").

  4. I remember that rocket =) It started innocently enough…something like this.

  6. So true.

    And then they get lit.

  7. That’s what happens when you try to fly sugar motors. APCP all the way no KNO3 and C12H22O11 mixtures.

  8. Nothing wrong with sugar motors. If they’re built right. I was out on the range when this thing blew. Man, that dog was loud.
    Shame about the X-Wing. 8^(

  9. Oh, thanks Todd for a pointer to the best video yet…

    What Really Happened

This is the one to watch if there can be just one…
