It reminds me of an analysis I did of the data in a CBO book for total government spending (federal + state + local). Going back as far as they track the data, and with few exceptions, government spending goes up when we have Republican Presidents and it goes down when we have Democratic Presidents. (A simple time-lag argument does not explain the data, as the pattern holds strongly over the 12+ year stretches of Republican and Democratic Presidents)
Causality cynics should vote for the opposite of the party rhetoric… 😉
