On the V2.0 lawn dart, only the rear closure and parachute survived. The ballistic impact popped most of the paint off the nose cone.

On the LOC NORAD lawn dart, the motor was fine, but the videocamera was destroyed. The SD card survived, but unfortunately, had no video of the dramatic failure… (I think the Oregon Scientific ATC2K records to DRAM, and then burns the flash memory once the movie is complete. If the recording is interrupted by a power failure, nothing gets transferred to the SD card. I am open to suggestions of strap-on-videocams that record straight to flash…)

Funny note: I was able to bring everything back on a commercial flight… except the huge L730 motor tube, which TSA told me could be used as a billy club.

  1. You probably could write a stand-up routine on the comedy of traveling with these types of components! Sorry about the ‘lawn dart’.

  2. I think you might have trouble finding a videocamera that records straight to SD, because of the write time differences I’d imagine they go to DRAM as an intermediate. Perhaps look for something that has the flash integrated into the camera, and if you get a lawn dart desolder it from the board. I’ll keep my eyes open.

Could you bring the engines on the plane!?!

  3. Brutal. Just brutal. But great shot, none the less.

  4. Seems your having a streak of "high velocity" landings. Better luck in the future. Too bad about the video, it would have been interesting to view.
