Pre-flight testing of the new Telstar Logistics fleet vehicle for night launches at RocketMavericks this weekend. It’s an unusual fiberglass bird with 22 dancing LED triplet lights.

I hope I can bring it as carry-on baggage….

Heading out to the Black Rock Desert tonight. The night sky should be amazing. Will bring cameras…

And here’s a rocket review I wrote for EMRR.

Nusty: TSA was a hoot. No problem going out, and coming back, they were concerned that my L730 MOTOR (!) and attached guts of the V2 could be dangerous as a carry on since it could be used as a billy club…. So they advised me to check it in the luggage….

  9. You took a *rocket engine* on board and their concern was that you might hit someone over the head with it? Did they even know what it was?

If you ever take a liquid engine in carry-on, just make sure the LOX and kerosene are in see-through two ounce containers.

  10. Ding! Sold!

I’m hoping it comes in time for Burning Man! I’m taking my video rocket… going to try to get an overhead shot of the Man burning…

  11. Jim – I’m nearly certain that Steve is referring to the motor casing (a machined aluminum tube with closures on each end in which the motor itself is assembled) as opposed to the actual motor, with explosives.

The case itself is quite a beast. Unless I’m mistaken it’s 54mm in diameter and at least 649mm long (that’s over 25.5 inches for you non-metric types).

  12. heh…. it is a beast, and it was a bit more than an empty case… It was full of spent propellant. I could not clean it out since the forward end was softened and crushed from ballistic impact. The phenolic motor tube scrunched up like the paper covering to a McDonald’s straw, with various debris and wooden rings still attached. I thought they might take issue with the smell of AP, but no, they thought it could be used as a blunt instrument…
