   the holes on the side look like they may possibly be for the use of firearms to protect the castle from invaders. do you know if that’s what they were for?

   my ancestral homes in china had similar holes on the rooftops which were used to defend against the invading japanese army at the time.

   hmmm… yes, for the individual, and, on a much slower time scale, for societal norms and beliefs.

   You remind me of Steven Pinker’s optimistic observation: “The decline of violence is a fractal phenomenon, visible at the scale of millennia, centuries, decades, and years. It applies over several orders of magnitude of violence, from genocide to war to rioting to homicide to the treatment of children and animals.    Thanks for the Link on this "A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE" Steve..
   I ll have a look tomorow.

   In the same time..in case you didn t saw it live, when you were at TED or haven t seen it on TEDtalks videos. ( I recommand it to everyone, by the way ; )

   I watched : TEDTalk -Bill Stone: Journey to the center of the Earth … and beyond! A "MindBlow Talk" from him.

   If decline of vilence…(or irrational believes?? Uprising did you say M.Dawkins? : ).. is a fractal phenomenon and can be apply to other concepts …i ll bet a lot about the importance and potential impact of such human exploration on our society, at multiple-scales.

   If the true nature of mankind is the result of a fight, between the consciousness of his mind, and desirs of his subconsciousness… this kind of people and idea, are an open bridge to a "path" where: The nature of mankind (a global mankind..?!) could be the result of a fight, between the awareness of his past, present and futur discovery/exploration, and the fear of his old believes..

   Yes, I remember the Stone – one of many mind blows culminating in a brain spa experience…. (here are some of the other blows)

   And yes, we see the fractals again. At the inter-generational level, it is hard to critically evaluate childhood indoctrination, and so ideas hitched to "proper upbringing" can self-perpetuate.

   Popping up a few layers of abstraction, we are subconscious agents in the emergent phenomena of a societal hive mind which may operate at a glacial pace… pre-Internet
