NASA hosted an interesting conference this weekend entitled The Future of Intelligence in the Cosmos. Frank Drake (of the Drake Equation) introduced Prof. Greg Laughlin as the first speaker. Greg first introduced me to extrasolar planet hunting at Lick Observatory three years ago.

Here he is showing the climate model for 51 Peg; “the night side is hot enough that it emits its own visible blackbody radiation.”

From the over 70 planets discovered circling distant stars, Greg estimates that over 50% of stars have planets, and 20% of those are potentially habitable. These are two of the variables in the Drake equation. “With 100 billion stars in the galaxy, this is an optimistic first look.”

  1. 70 out of millions….we are not alone. Oh what the future will bring! 😉

  2. What are the chances that our intelligent probes sent out meet one of theirs’ and when is that likely to happen? If our probes or messages did intercept one of theirs..it would have happened so long ago! Knowing that they are out there is one thing but getting to communicate with them in real-time…that’s entirely another thing.

  3. I would recommend this EXELANT documentary from Discovery channel :
ALIEN PLANET ( Darwin IV expedition ) .
With interview from : Michio Kaku, Stephen W. Hawking, J. Craig Venter, Dr. James Garvin, Curtis Clark etc..

Here is the intro : AlienPlanet Intro, youtube

  4. @Drona – similar to your posting…

fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

The lynch-pin here is the definition of "detectable" …as in 100 years from now an alien race finally gives up after beaming the earth for eons with marked protons aligned specifically to tell a story (say multiple arrangements of the three quark composition) and we (a relative definition of "we" from a temporal viewpoint) didn’t get the message.

  5. speaking of the probability of extra-terrestrial life, has anyone seen this article and the attached scans?

    terrestrial, extra-terrestrial, or elaborate hoax…?

  6. If these affidavits are true, well-targeted subpoenas might be a more efficient way to study potential alien intelligence artifacts than tinkering with equations and telescopes 😉

  7. I didn’t know NASA does conferences like this! Shows how informed I am…

  8. Is TheAlieness GiselaGiardino from one of these planets?

  9. Yes!… the proof has been among us all along…

  10. *jeez they finally found it out*

    LOL! :D:D:D
