NASA hosted an interesting conference this weekend entitled The Future of Intelligence in the Cosmos. Frank Drake (of the Drake Equation) introduced Prof. Greg Laughlin as the first speaker. Greg first introduced me to extrasolar planet hunting at Lick Observatory three years ago.
Here he is showing the climate model for 51 Peg; “the night side is hot enough that it emits its own visible blackbody radiation.”
From the over 70 planets discovered circling distant stars, Greg estimates that over 50% of stars have planets, and 20% of those are potentially habitable. These are two of the variables in the Drake equation. “With 100 billion stars in the galaxy, this is an optimistic first look.”
