Sam Goldman and Ned Tozun were delighted to win the DFJ Venture Challenge today. They now have $250K to pursue their dream: to make kerosene lanterns a part of history, where they belong.

www.dlightdesign.com provides cheap solid-state lighting to the developing world, where 2 billion people live without access to electricity, and use kerosene lamps and candles for lighting.

Ironically, kerosene lighting is one of the most expensive ways to light a home (consuming up to 30% of family income in many cases).

Kerosene lamps kill or seriously burn millions of children per year, and are a leading cause of indoor air pollution.

Over a five-year period, one kerosene lamp releases one ton of CO2 into the air (equivalent to driving a car from SF to NYC).

With their portable power light, d.light hopes to be able to boost safety, health, productivity and education while saving cost.

Here you see their reaction to the applause.

  1. Great project. Godspeed with development.

  2. Cool! We need many more inventions like this.

  3. Congrats on doing some social investing — and I’m sure this is going to be a wildly profitable venture!

Don’t know if I told you but Vrinda has been in the LED space for over a year (at "Strategies Unlimited") And also worked on the Stanford project that built Solar powered LED lanterns for use in developing countries. Goal was to….eliminate kerosene lamps… 🙂

  4. A good venture, indeed! Hmmmmm…back to their web site….;-)

  5. That is a great idea! It is a small contirbution to change the world and it will change people’s lives in a huge way! Congratulaitons on these wiiners!!! Good job!

    I visted their website.

  6. Bravo! What a noble cause.

  7. Brilliant – best of luck to them!!

  8. This looks great – there are other folks in this space who have been working on the same thing, such as the solar electric light fund (self.org). The social and global impact here could be huge, but I thought this was a venture competition not a social impact competition. Is this actually a business? If so, are the founders committed to running it as one? I’ve never before seen the website of a for-profit business soliciting for volunteers, for example.

  9. Yes, they are aiming to be a profitable business that also generates a lot of social capital.

  10. On a similar note, I’m keeping a close eye on the SCORE project, which although targeted at the developing world would go down very well in rural England – a wood-burning AGA generating cooling for the fridge, excess electricity to charge up mobile devices and heat to warm the kitchen, keep the Border Collie cosy and cook awesome bread – that’s a product that would sell very well to the green welly wearing classes. I’d be first in line to buy one.

  11. Interesting. $250k equals the entire investment in this factory in Xiamen, China that is producing exactly what these guys are setting out to do. Selling for $6 for white LED lamp with narrow and wide lenses, lithium-ion battery, USB port and a dynamo to charge it when it can’t be hooked to a power source. The demand for the past year has been overwhelming, the factory can’t keep up with domestic demand, much less the rest of the world’s demand. There is a huge market for these lights, the question is if these guys can get to market in time.

  12. Oh wow Sam looks so happy :)) Go d.light!!!!!!

  13. hmmmm….so what powers the LED if the intended market for this device are remote/rural areas with no access to electricity?

  14. would they possibly be solar powered LED? That would make alot of sense since they draw so little power, and last forever, durable, etc.

  15. Exactly. Konarka and others are working on radically more affordable solar.

  16. Sing me up for "radically more affordable solar."!! ~tmo

  17. fast forward to today… 30 million lives impacted, and approaching $1 billion of energy savings…..

Delighted at d.light today — and in the lobby, I noticed the statue we gave them for their first funding in 2007: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/522409778

  18. a) brilliant b) time flies …
