I love tortoises. Have you seen The The Great Turtle Race (not tortoises, but still cool) this year? They’re on their way to the Galapagos. I’m rootin’ for Billie.
I know a turtle who covered more than 10.000 km in about 10 days… by air mail, tho. His name is Maverick, likes to rest atop of the globe and laughs a lot (not like the dude here, he looks very serious… Respect, man, the dude means it). 😀
Hi jurvetson,
Cool picture! I used it on the Yahoo! Answers front page to complement a question in the Best of Answers module.

Tortoises are facinating & fun to watch. I used to care for my neighbors’ two dozen desert tortoises when they were away. they had all ages, raising many from eggs. If only they could tell us all they have lived through, especially the huge 100+ ones….;-)
what´s the difference between "tortoise" and "turtle"? In spanish we only have one word for them: Tortuga.
I prefer "tortoise" if both nouns mean the same subject, sounds posh and… mystic. But I always doubt if I am doing ok to use the names as synonyms. =)
thanks…
The tortoise lives on land, cousin to the aquatic turtle… but the naming conventions vary across the flavors of English…
Thanks! It´s clear now -i still like ‘tortoise’ more-. So Maverick (the one mentioned above) is a tortoise, and his hawaiian namesake is a turtle.
Thank you as well for that link to wikipedia, it made me meet Owen and Mzee… how beautiful a story.. didn´t know it. 😀
