What was it? It is gorgeous, though probably not the way the original builders wanted it to be.

It rises up about 60 ft. from the beach where I was standing. It is the ocean-facing front of the Ritz HMB. I assume that the posts were sunk down into the sandstone long ago to provide strength to the ground above, but the pounding of the ocean has hollowed them out. One of the posts hangs freely in the air beneath the crop of this photo. If they are cement with rebar, perhaps the cement picked up a casing of the natural sand as it dried, making the exposed pillars look as if they were carved from the cliffs…

It is odd that you went back here so recently, as I was only just thinking about this photo a few months ago.
I remember there being some question about how the piles were driven/formed?
It looks like there is a steel pile on the left of the new image?Having worked in marine construction for the last few years, I am amazed that the piles weren’t designed to go below the L.A.T., to prevent this kind of damage. Perhaps the structure only had a design life of a few decades?
