You can watch the launch live, if it happens (update: now scheduled for 5:05pm PST, March 20) video replay

The Falcon 1 is a new orbital launch vehicle with modern materials (carbon fiber) and electronics (the Shuttle uses 1970s technology). It has no fins, and dramatically lowers the cost of getting to orbit.

Scenes from demo flight one, which blew up in flight.

  1. Ooh, cool. Just fifteen minutes from now. I’ll have to watch that.

  2. Looks awfully windy in the video, though..

  3. Yeah… Last time seemed even more windy…. almost a gale to my eyes.

They had a successful static fire motor test yesterday (video)

I am not hearing any audio…. do you?

  4. Nope. The rocket seems to be venting more and more gas on the right side now, though. Hopefully it’s going to go soon.. I’m going to be late for class. ๐Ÿ˜›

  5. cool!!

    no audio here

just got a kit in the mail..when it’s built, I’m flying back to Mars ‘_’

  6. Does ‘terminal’ mean ‘we’ll try again in 20 minutes’ or ‘some other day’?
I can’t hear the audio since I’m in class at the moment. ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. They cancelled for the day, correct? (that’s what I determined from the audio)

  8. I was off line there for a bit too. Looks like they are venting down the LOX.

update; I just heard that they have scrubbed for the day and will retry tomorrow.

  9. great – that is crazy about their satellite landing back in the machine shop virtually unscathed! glad i missed the excitement earlier today and can come and keep a fresh live eye on things tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. No fins? Steve. Why don’t you build a no-fins rocket?

  11. Well, that takes serious skills, and active guidance… which would be very much illegal for a bloke like me.

Update: the 24 hour flight delay was due to a problem switching from landline communication to radio.

It reminds me of how many things can go wrong…. Even with our simple rockets, Erik and I have had many machinations at the pad just to get a wireless video feed working.

  12. T-3 minutes ! Bummer… Terminal Count Abort in the final second… Lots of water on the pad, and cursing that I don’t think they intended to be on the audio link… =)

Update: They may recycle to a T-11 minutes to launch. You can watch it live here.
