“I love Apple computers. I’m obsessed. My MacBook challenges me: ‘What are you going to write that is worthy of me?’”

Lost, Alias and Star Trek are each “a series of mystery boxes. Mystery is the catalyst for imagination.”

He is also a warm and wonderful person, IMHO. During speaker prep, we marveled at how strange it is to have turned 40. His grandpa was a big influence on him, and used to take household technology apart. “It was a wonderful gift for a kid.”

I am looking forward to the next Star Trek, which J.J. Abrams will produce and direct.

  1. He is a total inspiration. I don’t love all of his work, but it all has a spark that makes you want to peek twice into the mystery box.

Can’t wait for the new Trek. I think its going to be a prequel type story…

  2. I like the story about a magic box he bought years ago in nyc that he will never open ever he says

  3. Yes. He brought it on stage, still sealed from his childhood.

  4. ‘What are you going to write that is worthy of me?’”…hahaha! that’s brilliant!

i can’t look at my MBPro in the same way now…without imagining the isight starting to glow deep red, looking at me disappointedly as I type…and a HAL-like voice saying, "I’m sorry Nels, I’m afraid I can’t do that."

looking forward to watching the podcast of this one.

  5. That box takes on a whole new meaning after last night’s episode of LOST.

  6. What happened? I don’t get TV.

  7. This week’s episode contained a reference to a "magic box" at a very critcal point in the episode’s and the shows plot progression. Theories are abound as to what the box is a metaphor for, whether or not it exists and what it might consist of. I have my own theory that the box is a metaphor for J.J. Abrams’s own mystery box you journaled here.

  8. and now his box is on the cover of WIRED

  9. This is very interesting…. mystery and such. "The Tao that can be spoken of is not the real Tao."
