Murray Gell-Mann, Nobel Laureate for the Quark, joked that he was glad to join his peers on stage.

He opined that beauty and elegance are highly correlated with truth.

A unified theory of physics will likely exhibit symmetry and self-similarity across scales. “These are emergent properties of the fundamental laws of physics.”

  1. Newton, Einstein, and Gell-Mann. Is that Bach behind Gell-Mann?
    [Taken at TED I presume]

  2. @drona: Looks like Beethoven to me….

I remember reading "The Quark and the Jaguar" with great interest when I was in high school. It wasn’t the source of my interest in particle physics, but it was certainly one step on the way.

  3. This is such an exciting time for the Theory of Everything ! I try to keep up! 😉

  4. distinguished company indeed…

last night i watched the theoretical physicist Lee Smolin on the BBC’s Hardtalk (site not updated to contain programme yet) discussing over-eager consensus reached upon superstring theory, which he believes is leading to sloppy and self-congratulatory thinking – quite interesting, and at points hilarious as Stephen Sackur (the political journalist) struggles to ask intelligent-sounding questions 🙂

  5. drona…yeah, i agree with Josh. i think it’s beethoven too, in his typical brooding downward gazing profile:)

  6. I like this comment from Murray Gell-Mann, that beauty and elegance are highly correlated with truth. I hope you will enter this elegant image in the 2008 – "FIRST – THE EARTH!" Photo-ART Competition Exhibition, in CAT. # 9 – ‘FACES OF THE EARTH!’, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group pool & EXHIBITION.
