Geordie Rose on stage at the Computer History Musem as data streams into the quantum computer…

Geordie showed three demos running on the 16 qubit computer back in Burnaby. The machine is targeted at a broad class of optimization problems and parametric database search.

The Register (U.K.) published the first report from the floor that I could find. TV coverage should air on NBC tonight (Bay Area I presume) at around 6:15pm.

One funny story from the Q&A: A fellow stood up and pointed to me and confessed that he saw the photo I posted on flickr, with the visual comparison to the La Scala opera house in Milan. That was Sunday. So on Monday, he called Lufthansa, and flew out from Milan to make the event Tuesday morning.

  1. woooo!

how incredible about the La Scala comment connection… did Kenny Baker wheel himself in too, perchance? *

  2. Wow. Awesome that this is happening…. The tech, the company, the whole bit(s).

You can sort of feeeeel the future accellerating toward us when this kind of tech starts becoming real. I’m sure that sensation is multiplied a few times over for you Steve, as your right in the thick of it!

Additional awesomeness that you achieved a Flickr Reality Distortion for this fellow in the audience.

  3. I have to admit I was very skeptical when I first started to hear rumours about this company a few years ago from physicist friends in Vancouver. Nice to see the prototype has made it to demo stage.

Thanks for these very interesting posts.

  4. I think most people are still extremely skeptical, since the company hasn’t released any information on the quantum coherence of their system and has made very questionable claims about its potential to solve NP-complete problems. It does seem cool, though, but I’m afraid the chances of it being for real are low.

  5. Is the presentation or the presentation materials available online?
Edit: Ah, nevermind. Video to be released on feb.15 – http://www.dwavesys.com/registration.php?eventid=9

This is extremely cool, especially if the thing proves to be as rapidly scalable as Geordie Rose claims it is.. Best of luck Steve, hope you’ve struck gold on this one.

  6. Hey, Steve! 🙂

I was that fellow, even if it was Herb, CEO of D-wave to point the story out, as I would have not bragged about it first hand, but it is true! I think that we assisted an historic moment yesterday, and that QC will progress very rapidly from now on.

In the meantime I am posting a series of thoughts about the event and the system both in my Italian blog and in my English blog.

Also have posted my photos of the event.

  7. amazing. amazing. amazing. What a cool world we live in!

Wait, thought my message was encrypted, but ummm. What are the implications of D-Wave’s work again?

  8. D-Wave is doing interesting work, but it is not exactly a quantum computer.

  9. The NY Times has a skeptical article. They mention you!

  10. and some déjà vu, 13 years later… WFH in the Matrix Was it a glitch in the Matrix, folding time?
