La Jolla is biotech mecca…

The 92121 zip code, just North of San Diego, has the most biotech companies, 2.8x that of second place (South San Francisco).

  1. Our future in the green bubbles! Nice one…;-)

  2. interesting!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. cool shot!

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

  4. can you tell us about the plant used, the end fuel and the process please? cleaner and more glamorous than i’ve seen before! those are incredibly thick bubble skins, in an apparently highly viscous fluid

  5. Not just biofuels… great wallpaper for your computer too…

  6. break out the bubbly! your photo & caption actually gave me an idea – to produce a global biofuels map where each ‘hotspot’ is represented by a bubble, and the size of the bubble is proportional to market share (real and potential). A forecast map a few years out would presumably produce some bubbles in unexpected locations.

  7. hmmm….. and global warming should extend the oil palm regions out from the current 10° band around the equator…

biotron: I can’t talk about this one yet… sorry.

  8. yes indeed…re: palm, malaysia & indonesia will certainly face some new competition in decades to come!

  9. Interesting!

  11. Very interesting picture! Nice close-up.

  12. Very cool macro shot!!!

  13. So why is La Jolla so hot on bio? I’m not familiar with the area or local schools and undustry.

  14. Heh, fuel of tomorrow… Or perhaps one day computer.

Wrong bubbles, but bubbles nonetheless. =) Bubbles have been a theme today.

  15. Great shot. Nice composition and color.

  16. Great abstract, like the vivid green.

  20. I don’t know if you know, but your picture was used in a TED talk by Juan Enriquez. It’s a pretty cool talk, I figured you’d appreciate the link. After cruising your photostream to find this pic – I’m sure you actually do know. Cool stuf, BTW. I’ve enjoyed the ride. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Thanks, I had not seen that yet. I will post a link to it.

And yes, I do work with Juan Enriquez on the Synthetic Genomics board.

  30. Today at TEDx Buenos Aires we saw 4 talks from Monterrey, and one was this. And I took a pic for ya… it was quite mystic that I was there seeing a talk which I knew about, which you attended and in which a pic of you I knew of was used… so familiar. Far away, so close. You been here in a way today.

The picture is in my yet-incomplete facebook TEDx album.

  33. Thanks, and I’ve noticed this photo cropping up with different crops everywhere. Here’s one I really like from the PopTech Energy Disruptors salon

    Poptech Energy Disruptors
Sapphire Energy has a version where they take credit for the photo, and that is quite funny as I took this shot at one of their direct competitors, Synthetic Genomics, where I serve on the board.

  34. This photo is spectacular from all points of view.

  35. Thank you for this amazing image! I used it in my post here (with all the credits, of course): dailyfusion.net/2013/10/u-s-biodiesel-production-will-sur…
