I have to go outside for the sanding and chemical work. I am strengthening the LOC IV to withstand the pressure wave and fin flutter of Mach 1 and 47 G’s of acceleration on a J350 motor (according to Rocksim). I coated the fins with JB Weld and added a metal motor retention nozzle, metal clamps for the kevlar shock cord, and a kevlar chute protector. JB Weld can be used to repair cracked engine blocks on tractors, but will probably not be strong enough. The more experienced rocketeers recommend fiberglass or carbon fiber.

The baby in my other hand is the nose cone for my new V2 project. I sank metal pins through the tip to secure 1.5 lbs of lead buck shot and epoxy (to shift the center of gravity ahead of the center of pressure, the essential rule in the “rocket science” of stability).

  1. WIth hands like that you should be playing piano.;)

  2. Yay! And will these have video cameras?

When is the next big launch event? I would love to go to one.

  3. sweet!
    make that:
    Super Sweet!!
    BALLS? (the event)

  4. This is a hobby that keeps one’s mind well honed! It sounds fascinating.

  5. Now, wait just a minute: I get stopped by police for photographing a historic water works building, but you can openly build cruise missiles in your backyard without the neighbors phoning Homeland Security?

  6. hobbies are good!

as much as i love the tech and the craft of the rockets, i’m also impressed with the delayed gratification. the anticipation must be tough.

i’m sure there are long moments while still building when all you want to do LAUNCH THIS BAD BOY!!!

    🙂

  7. Wow! You weren’t kidding when you said that the V2 was going to be big.

BTW…was that you I just saw on iTunes sitting in the front row and checking out corn-cob briquettes at Amy Smith’s 2006 TEDTalk? I’ve been watching those videos and am enthralled by the speakers and the ideas.

  8. Sounds likely. I am often sitting on the front row at TED

    B-man: so true.

    c# gal: but then I’d need talent…

oddwick: I will probably launch these at the LUNAR Snow Ranch event on March 3. The 1000mph fiberglass launch will need to wait for the Black Rock Desert for a higher altitude waiver and a better chance of finding it when it comes back. So that will be Mavericks in July or BALLS

The Mavericks site is under construction, and most of the photos come from my flickr CC collection. =) It is a new event and will have competitions with prize money.

  9. And the project is finally complete, and I got to launch both on my birthday weekend… Two awesome flights. (LOC IV and V2 photos)

  10. Very cool hobby you have!
Also nice to see you 🙂
