Actually Rocketeer, there IS such a thing as a "J Turn" in ski racing! And you’re right, it can be quite hard.
A J Turn basically amounts to attacking the gate heading directly at it (straight down the hill,) then rapidly weighting your tails to boost you around the gate, hence the "J" shape. Its most common in slalom and giant slalom. Not the most graceful turn in the book, but it can be really effective for some racers. I think Alberto Tomba used it pretty extensively. Its a demanding turn and it tends to suit the bigger, more brutish racer, IMHO.
