The contest window opens in a few days…and now there is a giant golf ball waiting on the hill-top tee… (just like the one that appeared in Hawaii…. spooky)

More photos for those unaware of this big wave event:

“Mavericks is a world-renowned big wave break located one-half mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California. In 1975, Jeff Clark became the first person to ever surf Mavericks. For the next 15 years, he surfed there alone as no one else dared to tackle what is today considered one of the most challenging waves in the world. Many believe this 15 year solo effort to be one of the great feats in surfing history… By the early 1990s, word of Jeff’s adventures began to spread, and since then Mavericks has moved into the foreground of modern big-wave surfing, attracting the most elite riders to test its limits each time it breaks. These riders are presented with waves that have crested at over 50 feet, remarkably strong currents, dangerously jagged rocks and shallow reefs, and frigid water temperatures. In summary, Mavericks is like no other place on the planet.”

  1. i heard, that a big legend a hawain surfer died there…. but cant remember the name…. was something with O

  2. Two O’s….

"On Christmas Eve in 1994, Hawaii champion surfer Mark Foo was crushed by a 30-foot wall of water… A submerged, rocky bed nicknamed "The Boneyard" awaits fallen surfers who ride the Mavericks breaks in too far." (source)

I have also heard from surfers that the pounding waves can come in such rapid succession that if you pile drive over the top of of a curl, you might not be able to get back to the surface for up to a minute.

I have not seen them yet myself, but I have heard the legend for so many years that I would love to catch it this winter. It’s challenging because they only give 24 hours notice of the contest, and everyone has to scramble.

  3. it’s a magnificent site! last year stuart jacobson/smjphoto and i photographed it together. flickr.com/photos/oceanbornstudios/97163009/in/set-720575…. hope to see you there this year!

  4. how cold is the water, it is winter out there

  6. Oh man, they upgrade that satellite every few years. Looks rediculously out of proportion now.
