As a child, I marveled at double rainbows, and their origin โ€“ the double internal reflection of sunlight in drops of watery mist. They are very cool, and not because of fairies or pots of goldโ€ฆ =)

Raindrops are not shaped like drops โ€“ the coherence of rainbows would not occur with teardrops. With spheres, you get internal reflection bounces sending the light back to the viewer, but slightly refracted, generating the color bands (diagrams). So, the color coherence is due to the angle between the viewer and the array of spheres.

The sun has to be behind you. I have always suspected that if the earthโ€™s horizon was not there or if you could view from a high platform with the sunlight streaming below, you would see a “rain circle” rather than a half-circle “bowโ€. It was just a theory, as I never got high enough.

I finally saw a full rain circle a few days ago. It was too big to capture in frame, but here is a quarter of it.

  1. Superb view!!!

    Un double arc-en-ciel sur Maui!

I heard recently on Canadian Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet that no person ever sees that same rainbow because it depends on the precise position that you are with respect to all other variables.

  2. You saw the Aleph. You were given a vision of wholeness and the Divine that only few ones ever witnessed.

    Blessed you are.

"And then it happened what I canยดt forget neither communicate. It happened the union with divinity, with the Universe (I donยดt know if those words differ). Ecstasy does not repeat its symbols; there are some who have seen God in a splendor, there are those who have perceived it in a sword or in the circles of a rose. I saw a high Wheel, that was not in front of my eyes, neither behind, nor beside, but everywhere at one time. That Wheel was made of water, but of fire as well, and it was (even though its border was visible) infinite. Interwoven, it was formed by all the things that will be, are and have been, and I was one of the fibers of the total weft and Pedro de Alvarado -who caused me pain-, was another one. There they were the causes and the effects and I only had to look at that Wheel to understand it all, endlessly. Oh, the happiness of understanding, greater than the one from inventing or feeling! I saw the universe and I saw the intimate designs of the universe. I saw the origins that describe The Book of Council. I saw the mountains that emerged from the waters, I saw the first men of wood, I saw the earthen vats that betrayed men, I saw the dogs that destroyed their faces. I saw the faceless God that exist behind the gods. I saw infinite processes that formed only one happiness and, understanding it all, I could also understand the writing on the tiger.

It is a fourteen-casual-word formula (that seem to be casual) and only by saying it aloud I would be almighty. I only need to say it to abolish this prision of stone, to make the day turn into my night, to be young, to be inmortal, to make the tiger destroy Alvarado, to plunge the holy knife in Spanish chests, to rebuild the empire. Fourty syllables, fourteen words, and I, Tzinacan, would reign the land that had reigned Monteczuma. But I know that I will never say those words, because Iยดve already forgotten about Tzinacan.

Let the mistery written in the tigers die with me. He who has half-seen the universe, who has half-seen the burnning commands of the universe, he canยดt think about a man, about his trivial successes or failures, even when that man is himself.[…]"

From "The Writing of the God" by Jorge Luis Borges (translation’s mine, also translated as "The Scripture of the God") [some bit more -to understand context, but not complete. if you can, read the whole story. It marked me deeply.]

  3. Oh that’s quite a head trip. Does he refer to God in the non-theist Einstein sense, or in the sense of fairies?

I was thinking of Dawkins’ Unweaving the Rainbow

  4. good god man, this is amazing!

  5. Oh no! Dawkins again!!!! =ยด(

Do me the favour, if you ever have the chance -surely you will- to talk to Richard, ask him if he knows Borges. I am happily finding out that much more people -specially scientists- than I could imagine have read Borges and find in him a mind trigger as I do. Some fairies are ok methinks -as long as we donยดt forget that they are that: sci-fi-.

You are blessed and a chosen-one anyway.

edit: just seen you question. Borges talks about God because he places many of his stories in times of mythology. So itยดs more a historical need for the narative-, rather than a personal subjective position of him about the idea of god and his (or "their") existance. His ideas on life and fate are not necesarily connected to a god-like philosophy or a religion. (in my own interpretation)

  6. I had the opportunity the other day to witness a night rainbow as the moon was coming up from the horizon. At first it just looked like a white one (against the black sky) but with a good second stare you could make out the ever so faint colors. Never heard of one until I saw it myself.

  7. congratulations on seeing the whole thing. i’m jealous!

  10. Yes… but then what about the times I have found myself in a sunlit mist, and all the mist droplets carried a full spectrum of a rainbow: an iridescent glowing of color…. I was INSIDE the rainbow…

Good to hear from you Steve, thanks for dropping by~~

  11. Then you have found the gold!

  12. Hehe…. And as a kid, like you, I was dazzled by rainbows…. I would walk toward the rainbows I saw… sometimes for a mile, just trying to get inside the colors…. little did I know that if you are in the right place and the right time, the misty marvel comes to you ๐Ÿ™‚
