This was the billboard on Hwy 101 that greeted us last night.

The first “Internet Cocktail Schmoozefest Buffet Event” was in 1996. Hotmail registered their first customers free web based email. (I got Steve@Hotmail.com but later traded it (for an animated GIF) to Steve Douty, Hotmail’s VP Marketing.)

D’Cuckoo played their geek chic instruments, including the MIDI Ball – a giant, wireless, helium-filled sphere, let loose to volley about over the crowd. Each touch triggers new sounds and visuals while the band lays down the bass line.

In 2001, we had a space odyssey in the NASA Ames Hangar.

  1. cool sign – interesting description, too. strange

  2. That ball sounds fun. Did the receiver do interesting improv on top of the input from the crowd? I can imagine jazz/funk solo line/rhythm improvisation that was obvious enough that the crowd might play to it…

You’re just all over these days! Do you ever get a break!? I’m worn out just watching the tales, let alone living them.

  3. heh… Got GIF? Oui… As our webmaster at the time, I wanted to spice up our static site a bit with the eye-catching novelty of moving images… =)

I was happy with the trade, as Steve@hotmail.com was just too easy for the spammers….
