Al Gore during lunch at the XPrize Executive Summit…

On Iraq: “We ignored international law. It’s obvious that it’s a fiasco, a disaster. Bush’s decision to invade Iraq was the greatest strategic error in the entire history of the United States.” (!)

On Bush’s new Space Bill: “Now we are about to do the same for space. We are about to introduce the same fuzzy thinking and chaos as with Iraq. The U.S. unilaterally decides who gets to go into space? It’s hubristic. The new bill was introduced at 5pm, on Friday, before the long Columbus weekend. You don’t take that much effort unless you have something to hide.”

On Climate Crisis: “We have a global emergency. Our planet has a fever. If your child has a fever, you do something about it. If your child’s crib is on fire, you don’t ponder ‘is my baby flame retardant?’”

“We operate the planet as if it’s a going out of business sale.”

“We are putting 70 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per day. 25 million of those tons are absorbed by the oceans, forming carbonic acid. The shell-making of zooplankton and coral depends on free-floating calcium carbonate. Since 1850, we have changed the pH of the oceans worldwide. If we continue at our current rate, the oceans will become so much more acidic that we will disrupt marine life. So, even if a future planetary ‘albino effect’ shields us from the sun, the CO2 will still poison the planet and lose its habitability for us.”

(It reminds me of Jeremy Jackson of Scripps in the LA Times ocean series: “we’re pushing the oceans back to the dawn of evolution, a half-billion years ago when the oceans were ruled by jellyfish and bacteria.”)

On Television and Politics: “Technology can change culture. Writing ushered in the Age of Reason. This was generally a good thing. Well, Galileo got into a little trouble. So did Scopes in my home state. Television is changing the information ecology. Today, 80% of political campaign spending goes to TV advertising. The average American watches 4 hours and 39 minutes of TV per day. Japan is #1 at 5 hours/day. Argentina is #3. What do these three countries have in common? For the last three decades, they have regularly shorted your future, maybe because too many people were catatonic.”

After his talk, someone asked if he would run for President. Gore responded that he cares more about raising awareness about climate crisis. Follow-up exclamation: “You could do that as President” and Gore replied that he disagreed… but with an unusual twist, he added that if he believed that he could, he might reconsider. He gets the question a lot, and in February, at TED, he shared a different perspective.

P.S. Esther Dyson got a snap of me with him too.

  1. I read that as ‘Going Bush’, then I looked at the face, and nearly spat my drink out. Well, I would have if I had a drink. Gotta love that guy. I really enjoyed ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and have recommended that my friends go watch it. My background in american elections makes me so angry about the injustice that was his defeat.

I was very surprised by his film though, because (and I don’t know if this is just because I’m in the UK not the US) I had never heard of him as an environmentalist, even when he was Vice President. Had a good chat with my mother’s cousin last week (an environmental physicist) who has met Mr Gore a few times, and shares mutual friends, and he was telling me what a good guy he is. I really hope he considers running again, with his environmental policies as his key weapon. Maybe the USA is ready…

  2. Great shot, and valuable excerpts!
If US leadership doesn’t start LEADING the world in responding to global warming, well, before too long all other issues (war, terror, genocide) will be dwarfed by this looming catastrophe.

Keep putting it out there, man. I’m very happy to see this.

  3. I thought the title said "Boring Gush" for a minute there…

  4. it didn’t get me like the buzz aldrin photo, but still, …cool!

  5. //off topic// He really needs to put on some kind of diet though. His belly is exploding like CO2 in the atmosphere. Don’t remember he was this fat back in 2000. And in the U.S., nobody votes for not-so-appealing candidates (that’s sadly true).

  8. I Feel exactly like mrmanc.

  9. That must be awful for you Stephane…

Topically though, well done Mr Gore for working with Mr Branson to promote CO2 scrubbing technology… I can’t help thinking though that it’s the wrong way to look at the problem, and if we are given an ongoing cure then we’ll never have enough motivation to develop truly green technology.

  10. No, I feel much happier than most people, I think (and not only because I’m hearing Mark Knopfler and Björk while writing this). Once again, I’m thinking the same thing, especially this morning, there was a public conference about the GIEC aired on France Culture, and they were saying that this methods will be needed to survive 🙁
A major issue about the movie.

  11. Hey I found this pic working (trying to find pics for a website among the most interesting for "argentina" on CC licence)…

I would like to know where Al took the TV statistic from… I doubt. Mostly because most of our scarce population is rural and basically poor… and the only TV chanel they receive by air is crap (federal). How did they get to know all this people watch that much TV or TV at all? *Bewildered* (Is this official data from our government?)

oh and… what does he mean here: "What do these three countries have in common? For the last three decades, they have regularly shorted your future, maybe because too many people were catatonic.”

    :—————————————////

  12. Here’s some older data for some countries. It has the U.S. at 4 hrs/day, and Gore’s update was 4 hr, 39 minutes per day. Gore said Japan was 5hrs. And Argentina was #3.

They have other info on Argentina. I’m sure you can find it somewhere; this was just the first result I got from a google search.

I still have my hand written notes, and "shorted" is hard to read. He may have said "mortgaged your future." My handwriting was a bit messy. In any case, the gist of Gore’s statement was that the governments have exploited their people for short-term gain, and nobody was paying attention becaused they were numbed by TV.

  13. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Global warming – we CAN stop it !!!, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.

You have been awarded a Polar Bear Award

for contributing to global warming awareness

  14. thanks The Albanian for bringing this post back to top on my "Comments you made" page. =)

Steve, sorry I missed your answer somehow. Re-sorry. Thank you. Thank you for even checking your notes for the "shorted" meaning… I only needed to get the idea, no need to be verbatim. I understand.

For the statistics, still a bit tough to believe to me, but it may be. See, data can be so rearranged in order to become "meaningful" statistics… As the saying goes: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." =) [This doesn´t change the validity of Al’s words, tho, on the mortgaged future of these/our societies nor of anything else he said. It´s just a general observation on oldschool rhetorics). 😉

    Gracias! 😉

  15. Hi Steve — What a great image and interesting points!! Let’s promote some serious discussion to clarify all these points, to get it right!!! — Let’s send it out to our 2008 group – "FIRST – THE EARTH!" 16. “Technology can change culture. Writing ushered in the Age of Reason. This was generally a good thing. Well, Galileo got into a little trouble. So did Scopes in my home state."

The real story of Scopes (not that Al Gore would know) is that he was recruited to participate in the trial, willingly did so, and was rewarded with a scholarship to the University of Chicago. We all should have such trouble.

  20. Thanks, id10t… I"ve finally found my audience.

  21. Fantastic capture. Interesting to think what world situation would look like if he had indeed been allowed to take office.

  22. Al Gore stills the best person for me i wish he gonna be present of US someday wish

  23. Fingers crossed for the GoreSat launch tomorrow by SpaceX (weather permitting). 17 years in the making, Al Gore just penned an article in SciAm on this mission:

"Long delayed, DSCOVR is an observational mission to the Lagrangian point 1, or “L1,” a unique point between the sun and Earth where the gravitational pull of each sphere is equally balanced by the other. As it co-orbits the sun with Earth, DSCOVR will have a constant view of the Earth with the hemisphere facing the satellite fully illuminated by the sun as Earth rotates. From this unique vantage point, DSCOVR will capture and beam back to Earth a continuous stream of images of our planet similar to the historic image taken on December 7, 1972, during the Apollo 17 mission – which remains the only such image we have more than 42 years later. Not coincidentally, it is still the most published photograph in history."

And here’s another photo from the space event above, by
