The sun-bleached Shuttle rendered in LEGOs is an apt reminder of a disco-era technology jerry-rigged to 21st century space travel.

Even the segmented solid boosters are a tribute to political pork trumping all other priorities, like safety. (For the inland state of Utah to win the business, they had to be able to ship the motors out by rail, necessitating a segmented design deemed unsafe by all other space programs)

But there is hope. After years of criticism, NASA recently took the unprecedented step of granting $500 million to the private sector (Rocketplane-Kistler and SpaceX) to develop the next generation of launch vehicles. This is the first part of potentially $2-3 billion of NASA funding.

I am also looking forward to the X-Prize Cup in Las Cruces next week, to see what a rich ecology of entrepreneurs can dream up.

  1. Another quite realistic mode. Impressive!

Just wondering: if you had 20 Million$ to spare, would go in space?

  2. I love LOOOVE Legos. Interesting… I can’t wait to see what a rich ecology of entrepeneurs dream up too. Sounds as always very exciting.
I swear your life sounds more fun than the Discovery channel. hehe

  3. Woo, more cool legos, nice shot.

The lunar lander competition will be fun! We can hope that the private sector gets it done, but there a analog to the pork problem in the private sector… Profit greed. Money is a pain; you can spend a lot of it on a project and depending on whether or not it’s good design or how much profit is skimmed off, you could still end up with a sub-par product, private sector or public…

Better than the Discovery channel? How can you argue with myth busters!? Ok, they do get the science wrong sometimes, but they always have fun. The water skiing behind the 8 man crew boat was very fun, saw that last night. Steve, you LIVE the discovery channel, there’s no doubt about that.

  4. Aaaah sweet sweet market efficiency, may it get me to Space. Your post warms the cockles of my Cold Libertarian Heart.

  5. Heh… bringing the thread full circle, it looks like Mickey is doing the SpaceX design:

  6. We will be there with this:

Its our VTVL test vehicle that we were going to be flying in the Lunar Lander Challenge but we ended up hitting some snags with vendors. Instead we’re just going to be doing a long duration engine demo.

Stop by the booth if you get a chance!

  7. where is the hyper cool lego-land anyway?

  8. Victor: LegoLand, Carlsbad, CA (north of San Diego).

MMMealling: So cool. Wish I could see it in action. The ATF has been bumming out the rocketeers this week. I guess their mission is to be the buzz-kill bureau…

  9. (flies to Gooooooooogle. Found it..)
Gaaaaah, that’s so lame Steve, hopefully something can be worked out! How much harder is it to get an explosives license?

  10. Yep. I saw that release about the NPRM from Tripoli. I was always in favor of the lawsuits but everyone knew that it was just a matter of time before the NPRM would show up. The licenses aren’t that bad to get, especially when its compared to what it takes to get the California licenses. Its just a shame that its going to knock out the low end of the hobby that the kids and Born Again Rocketeers enjoy.

If you want to see one of that vehicle’s test flights let us know and we can hook you up. We’re right around the corner from Scaled and down the street from XCOR. 😉

  11. mmealing: your comment is a fun time capsule, from the days of fear and paperwork…

    Who do you love?

We fought the ATF, and we won!

  12. That is a wicked build!
