   I was always amazed at how Shadow Composites (shadowaero.com) could make a carbon fiber rocket that had surface mounted (!!) fins that could handle the Mach transitions with very few problems. I think sometimes designs assume that the solution to Mach transitions is to make thin but inflexible fins. The Shock Value’s fins were thin but flexible and with that custom Kosdon motor they could hit Mach 2 reliably.

   do they narrow the body of the rocket at the fins or place them higher up on the fuselage to even out the cross section transition (Im not sure what the term would be)?
