…continuing the theme that anything can fly with a big enough motor… This “rocket” recycled the club’s old bulhorn loudspeakers. It did some corkscrew loops over my head before slamming into the ground (the parachute did not deploy).

I’ll share some of the more wacky projects from this weekend’s LUNAR launch in Livermore.

  1. Slams to the ground??

Um. Steve. It looks like you took this picture straight up.

Don’t die… please. We would like to see more pictures in the future.

(Related note — my Oracle arrived in the mail!!!)

  2. True Dat! And anything with a big enough motor to get it to escape velocity will fly forever! Sounds like a fun weekend. 🙂

  3. sound effects next time please;))

  4. Great shot! What a spectacular billowing smoke cloud! Did you hear what size engine they had to use to get that airborne?

  5. sheesh. but then,it’s the risk that makes it a sport and not merely a hobby, right?

  6. heh… it sure makes it fun…

    Heads up!

Erik: I think Orvis said an E, but I think it had to be at least an F. The smoke is thickest when it does a loop and changes direction. The aerodynamics of stacked cones instead of fins must throw RockSim for a loop too…

Oddwick: Yes, it went directly overhead and I had the motor drive clicking the whole way. I got four great shots out of the stream.

Zenera: You read my mind! You need to hear these… My next photo post will oblige…

  7. next time fit someones iPod to it and play some tunes as it flies!

  8. very cool idea. It begs the question: which song to play?

Imagine Ride of the Valkyries blasting down from above…

  9. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called not intended for use as, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
I’m enjoying your photostream a lot, but this one in particular.
