I just got Photomatix, and this is my first auto tone-map merge. I like the natural effect much more than the auto-merge-to-HDR in CS2. Suggestions for Photomatix settings are welcome! So far, I have left it on auto.

  1. not knowing Photomatix, I can’t offer any settings suggestions, but if this is indicative of auto, I’d say auto is good.

I just checked their website (thanks for the name), this plugin will do wonders for panos/immersive work.

  2. ExCeLLeNT HDR!
    i prefer Photomatix also!
It does render much more natural tones in auto mode… imho!
..you can get some pretty surreal effects playing with the sliders!

… i’m curious if Adobe will update their algorithims for HDR, with Photomatix nibbling at a piece of their precious pie!

  3. Magical and brilliant and one of the finest HDR images I’ve seen on Flickr in several weeks.

For a first try, it is REALLY well done, Steve.

    BRAVO….!

  4. Nice job. I think the software upgrade was a good decision. Of course, I suggested it, but that’s beside the point.
Have fun with the sliders next time! HDR tonemapping offers quite a bit of room for experimentation with different looks, from simply nicely lit throughout (like yours), to rather stunning and surrealistic, and beyond (Leino88’s).

  5. Quite nice! I love how it picks up the subtlties of the earth tones.

  6. Auto has worked best for me. It’s amazing how the scale of the internet allows software vendors to drop their prices so much. With the free version you can work with just 2 images to get a pretty blend as well…

  7. I think you are right.. it certainly looks very natural. It didn’t scream "I’m not real" like so many HDR shots can.

  8. Really great. Must take a look at this new tool…

  9. OMG! I love this…Gorgeous….Thank you for sharing with us.
    .Have a great day….faved…..

  10. Yes, I like this much better than the average HDR done in CS2. This is a really remarkably and beautiful image, instead of looking cartoonish as most HDR’s I’ve seen.

  11. I love everything about this shot, the textures, the atmosphere, the hints of color in the foreground, well seen & captured

  12. Wow great shot! I love it!

  13. Wow, yeah, this is MUCH more natural looking than the other one. I guess it depends on what you’re going for. Love the unusual quality of the photoshop one, but for realism, this one is very nice. The fact that the sun isn’t even washed out blows me away. I know what it looked like in the prior one..

  14. Nice HDR, I like the gray blue tones of the water. —From (San Mateo County Group)

  16. Lovely tonemap on your sunset!

  17. Gorgeous image! I’m fairly new to Photomatix as well – great job!

  18. For pure relaxation, you just can’t beat HMB. I almost proposed to my (now) fiancee, but instead decided on the cliff house. Ah, fond memories…

  19. That is beautiful landscape! Wonderful colours and the flowers make the shot special!
